Although studies into Parkinson’s have been conducted since the 1960s, the cause of the disease is largely unknown and current treatments only disguise rather than slow or halt its progression.
In a very exciting recent press release, the Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, announced that $36.8 million will be released over the next five years to fund further Parkinson’s medical research. This money is from the Medical Research Future Fund and another $6.8 million will be provided to cover the salaries of specialist nurses whose role will be both educational and clinical.
The big hope is that by bringing together and supporting five major organisations here in Australia, patients and their families living here will be the first to benefit from any new targeted developments.
